Experts are simply those with experience, so while not a true saab trained expert, I can speak to this situation in one area. Have 2 Saabs that I have experienced this with (the starting then stopping, then eventually restarting again) only to do the same cycle. It turned out to be on one the hall sensor at the CS, and on the other the spark magnifier opposite the APC or ignition box in the Left fender inner wheel well.
Sice you have a 88 the hall sensor should be on the distributor. That isn't as effected by heat as the hall sensor at the Crank Shaft Pulley, so I wouldcheck the spark magnifier or spark intensifier first. It is reall easy to see . Just take a can of freeze type computer dusting spray with you on your next run. When car stops, spray the spark intensifier., if it starts sooner than it has been starting that pretty much locates the issue. Another way to test is start the car and use a hair dryer on the spark magnifier if the car stops again that might locate the spark magnifier as the issue. Then trythe cool spray. This process might keep you from driving the car and having to have it towed home. One other item that has given me permenet no start issues has been the resister type dist rotor , but your ssue doesn't sound like it. Let us know what works or doesn't . Best regards Frank
