Purist kind of question re: dashboard color Posted by Notnoel [Email] ![]() ![]() |
I just received my latest FleaBay acquisition: the crack free dashboard. Shockingly enough, it is actually crack-free, and is dark gray. My 1990 Vert had the same grey dash - I have buffalo gray leathers. When I first got my car, I had scavenged a decent (yes, cracked but < 1/2 inch in four places) from another car, filled the cracks with epoxy, and painted black with a Duplicolor vinyl paint I got at the parts store. It looked pretty good and none of the cracks grew any over the past 3 years.
OK, so my questions to the brain trust here on Saabnet are; 1) do you think that painting it may have had any protective (anti-crack) attributes; 2) I am pretty sure black dashes were once the standard - if my memory serves me, they were black in our 1984 and 1986 Saabs; and 3) assuming 2 is correct, what's the opinion on the aesthetics of the dark gray vs. black dashes. The only downside to painting the dash that I put in was the tendency to be highly reflective in the windshield, which I think would be the case if I armoralled the new dash, anyway.
Lastly, what recommendations do you folks have for preservation if I don't paint the dash. It is garaged at home and at work, so sees little sun except when I drive it (every day).
