I have to add my comments to this thread because I agree that the 1980 5 door was the best Saab ever made. Here's my story:
I started with a 5 door turbo, with typical b-motor mechanical issues. I stripped the car to a shell, changed the seat supports to be able to fit an interior from a later model car, swapped the doors for power units along with the hatch, and finally on a trip to the UK, went to a junk yard to get replacement opera windows matching the brown tint of the later car windows.
After getting the body repaired and painted, I used an 89 turbo parts car donor to convert my 1980 to a 16v turbo 5 speed. Minor changes to the rear wiring harness, swapped the dash, changed the headlight connections to run the square lights, and of course put an SPG suspension in it.
Before it got too rusty, it had 305,000 miles on it and was as reliable as any car 20 years newer. Wish I still had it. Replaced it with another Saab and called the junk yard to come get it (the rust was pretty bad at that point).
As far as practical, it was great. Comfortable for 5 passengers and hauling capacity like a small pickup. Tough to beat it.
