So I own a 1999 VW passat 1.8T, which is almost identical to the 98 A4 in every every every respect except the emblems.

The Passat is a dream in a lot of ways, but I got it from the first owner, who meticulously cared for it, and when the evil timing belt snapped under warranty, it got a new engine head, pistons too.

I do all of the work on the passat, just like the 900s I own. I think that the A4/passat is easy to work on, but there are a lot of expensive parts, like the FIVE control arms PER SIDE that get destroyed pretty easily (changed them twice in the 6 years I've owned it), and there are a lot of electrical gizmos that die as a matter of running hours, which can correlate to mileage, but not always. examples: ignition controlers, air temp sensors, ignition coils, O2 sensors, and on and on.

160K is not a ton, but be sure the timing belt has been done (maybe even twice!), and that the control arms have too. otherwise, unless you're great under the hood, you'll pay another 3000 in labor and parts within the year...

With that said, the A4 is a good car, safe, modern feeling, and good in the snow if its FWD. if its the quattro, you've got other issues that'll undwoubtedly rear their ugly heads since there's a lot more exhaustible parts on all four wheels.

Why didn't you just buy a 4700 dollar car if you got the cash for both?
