Re: 900 vs A4 Posted by Bryan [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: 900 vs A4, ZAAB ![]() |
I have a 900T and 2004 A4 quattro avant (thats the wagon version...) and love them both, completely different cars. People always steered me away from Audi because of reliability issues, but I finally decided I wanted to try one out.
First off, there were recalls for the sludge issue and you should check and see which years they apply to. Second, the Audi's dont break down alot if you maintain them. The people who complain about them breaking down are usually the one's who dont understand what they need to do to maintain the car. Once you understand the car, its a snap to maintain. A big plus is that parts are extremely easy to find for the A4, there are suppliers all over the place competing with eachother and lots of aftermarket manufacturers of good quality parts. Like the c900, there's lots of good used parts also because the A4 is Audi's #1 seller and also shares lots of common parts with other Audis and VWs.
They are very easy to work on, I do all my work myself and have been through almost everything because I heavily modified it. AND, you can take the A4 apart and put them back together a million times without the fasters cracking, they are engineered very well and dont break when you start pulling stuff apart. My 2003 Saab 9-5 Aero was the worst car I ever owned when it comes to the fasteners, they are mostly made of crappy brittle plastic that snaps, even when you aree careful and know what you're doiong they are prone to cracking the first time they are pulled apart. I used to do work on my 9-5 and hated pulling parts to get at what you need to get at because this risk was always there. They are designed to be put together once (ok, maybe twice :)
The quattro drive system is not prone to failure. Sure axles and bearings will go, but thats normal for any car, its a wear item, another maintenance responsibility for the owner, just like our beloved C900s.
So its up to you really. I personally wouldnt buy a car that didnt have excellent maintenance history. But I am very happy with my A4 and my 900T. You cant really go wrong with either unless either has not been properly maintained.
