1996-1998.
First gen 9000's were SHARP, but were quirky, with 1991 being the best of that lot, IMO. 1992's had Traction Control (TCS) which can be a nightmare.
1993 was its own T5.2 engine management, had TCS all over the place, Clarion sound etc. Last year for a glovebox!
1994 started T5.5, and had optional TCS. meh.
1995 also had optional TCS, but you could now get the beautiful Harman/Kardon sound system. Sweet music.
1996 started OBD2. TCS was GONE from the lineup. H/K sound, rear cupholders in the armrest, paperwork flaps in the front of the front seats. GREAT vehicle.
1997. Same as 1996 but addded a "2.3 Turbo" emblem to the rear of the car.
1998. A cut above the rest. Truly spectacular cars. They seem to have been built with a touch greater care, and love than the rest. If you find one for sale. Buy it. The 5-speed had Aero 225hp tuning.
Best year? Can't go wrong with any 1996-1998 car. Just my opinion though.
