Best place to tap into dash lighting is off the light in the ashtray--very close by.
Best place to come through the firewall is in the passenger (US) footwell. There are three small rubber plugs on the firewall plugging holes where the master cylinder would be mounted in a RHD car. You can pull a plug, drill a hole in it and put it back in the hole and then pass the wires through it. Make sure the hole is small enough to keep the rubber plug tight around the wires to keep it watertight. You can then run the wires through the plastic wire chase on the upper firewall to where the senders are--keeps things neat. You can get to where the wires come through by just peeling back the carpet and padding in the passenger footwell. No need to remove bolster (or even the lower dash console if you know your way around back there). Pulling out the lower din radio cage (or cubby box) and the ashtray retainer will give you more than enough access. There are holes in the rear top of the big lower din to feed wires to the gauges.
