Lambda was around since at least 1977, if not earlier, on California 99s. All 99 & 900 turbos imported to the USA had lambda, starting with model year 1978.
Non-North American cars didn't necessarily have lambda at all. A quick way to check is your fuel distributor. Lambda cars use a distribution block that looks like all the other 99 & 9000 blocks, with four fuel ports out the top. The non-lambda turbos used a distribution block with six ports, and two were blocked off.
Saab also moved the lambda (oxygen) sensor around several times. It's been a while, so I don't recall where, exactly, it is supposed to be on a 1980 US 900 turbo. But it's been located on the downpipe from the turbo, in the elbow after the turbo, and on later cars, further down the exhaust pipe.
You might also want to post over in the 99 bulletin board. The 99 only had the B-engine turbo, and there are quite a few folks there doing their level best to keep them running.
