it saddens me whenever rust is mentioned (long)... Posted by baggsly [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Not the 1990 SPG post...but need comments..., CBS ![]() |
as reason to get rid of a car. all i have to do is look at british and european car magazines and see what they bring back from 2 square feet of unrusted metal to fantastic cars and i'm inspired.
yes, rust is cancer, but cancer can be beaten. yes, it's time consuming, and can be expensive, but you could also look at it as therapy for tough days at work/home and a chance to learn new skills.
paint is paint, that can always be redone. i'd rather have a solid foundation of a car, with good running gear, than a paint job. look at paint as a reward for the old girl once you've got rust gone.
one day all the rusty cars will be gone, and then in order to salvage parts we will be forced to strip from "ok" cars. sad but true, these classics are disappearing, and the more we can keep running and available the better.
if you've got the space, and the inclination to work on her, i'd say keep it. i don't have hoarder status, and i don't have a yard, storage space, or property to keep cars. perhaps the activities manager would be willing to learn more about cars (the old girl and current cars) so she can be better informed for the future (you didn't marry a nascar mechanic did you?).
i love my car, i have a smile on my face whenever i can boost it, 85mph is an easy cruising speed on the freeway. and inspite of its many problems (getting fixed one at a time), i am always amazed at well these cars were put together, function, run, and last.
yes, i'm playing devil's advocate, and if circumstances do not allow you to keep it and/or fix it, then try and find someone who would be interested in bringing her back to longer life. you might end up selling her cheap, but perhaps that is a better fate than parting her out and watching her die one day at a time. not to mention stress on marriage that might happen.
ok, i'm off my soap box, and i'm going to go load up my crack bastard car with boxes as i'm moving stuff, and i'm going to smile for the whole 70 mile round trip. but i will still think sadley of another beloved car doomed to uncertain fate, and your tough decision.
