If you want to fix you own Saab, I applaud you. But don't start with the shop (Bentley) manual.
Start small and work your way up. Get your Dad/Husband/Significant Other to show you how to change the oil. Take an evening class in auto mechanics. If you have an Indy he may be willing to educate you.
Buy good tools. This usually means Sears Craftsman. For a Saab you will need a 1/4 inch drive set (metric) a 3/8 inch set, a set of Torx drivers, and the normal basics (hammer, pliers, vice grips, screw drivers, etc).
Tackle small jobs first and work your way up as your ability and confidence improve. When I started working on cars (almost 40 years ago!) it was hard to do permanent damage if you used common sense. Nowadays, you need to be more careful. If in doubt, ask questions first. Saabnet will usually give you good advice.
Lastly do it because you want to.
