First of all, the water pump doesn't create any appreciable pressure, its an impeller. When they fail, they don't fail to pump, the bearings and seal fail, causing them to get loose and leak. In extreme cases this can progress to the impeller contacting the housing. Its the loss of coolant, and system pressure, which cause the problems for the cooling system. The failed bearing can cause problems for the belts.
Are you loosing coolant? It sure sounds like you have at least lost pressure. It is worth going to a radiator shop for a pressure test.
