I doubt it's a transmission issue. Symptoms are usually different. I am certain you have a brake issue. You may have other problems, but up to the car completely screeching to a stop, you have the exact common symptoms of a sticking caliper.

I have a couple automatics, and yes, they are fragile. Change the fluid regularly, drive it until it fails, and then transplant a stick. These cars are much better with 5 gears than 3! When one of our automatics failed, it just wouldn't go into reverse to back out of the garage (the day after a long highway trip). The other one has a rising 2-3 shift point (a classic symptom). It's been like that for 2 years (daily driver). If you aren't seeing symptoms like that, change the atf (use type F only) regularly, don't drive it like a psychopath, + you should be fine...

Your car is over 20 years old. If it was a chevy, it would already be soda cans. At this point, stuff will break + you need to really keep up with the maintenance to not have issues. To some extent, eg. if you do all the work at an indy, that will cost money, but less than a car payment. The most cost effective way to own these cars is diy repair work...

If the car is rust free (it is from LA) + in good shape + you decide to get rid of it vs fix, my advice is this: rather than selling it to a scrapper, sell it cheap to a saab enthusiast who will fix it up (you won't get much from a scrap yard anyway). These cars are now classics...

good luck!

James...
