Zaab,
I broke the upper timing guide on another Saab a few months ago. It still is the same way I left it. However, I am thinking of epoxy for the that, and using the car sparingly for the tip of the guide broke in one piece. I intend to pull the engine, and do the job properly with new timing guides.
Two weeks ago, I pulled the head off the 86, and while doing so, it caught solidly on the upper timing guide, and I was very very careful! A definite panic I felt for I did this job last year(engine out) and replaced the guides with very good ones. I found the cylinder very heavy! I think because the car was jacked up too high. This may come across as funny, yet when I felt that I was losing the battle(timing guide straining from the head's weight), I stepped into the engine bay! My foot was on the battery tray, the other on the upper A frame, and once I had a solid grip, I yanked the head off easily, and carefully stepped out the engine bay.
900 aero mentioned a good point, yet the factory manual indicates to use the guide as a pivot...Hmmm
The thick blanket is a good idea. I'll do that. The mistake I could have made is the car too high, why the head felt like it weighed a ton of bricks.
Great help Saabers
