one trick is to use a 35mm film canister[black/gray kodak film can]with the bottom cut out to use to protect the tappet bore when removing a valve[saab made a similar tool],its a perfect fit.
you can get the valve out if you put a socket over the valve retainer and hit the socket with a rubber mallet while supporting the bottom of the valve with a small block of wood.Primitive but works,one problem though is you cant install them this way so best to find a valve spring compressor.any parts store should have the right one as just about all 16valve engines need the same tool.
