ignition cylinder mess

so i got a 94 900 turbo conv a few weeks back.
one day I go to start it (to take it to get a new top) and the battery is dead (prob my fault). so I have to push the car a few feet to line it up with my other car to jump it. when I get the cables hooked up and go to start the saab, the key has no tension in the ignition cylinder, so obviously the car won't start. moments before, it was fine. the only thing that happened was me pushing the car a couple of feet.
my first thought was that the ignition cylinder had failed randomly, so I went and ordered one. In my struggles to find the right one, a counter-person at a parts shop mentioned some kind of safety pin near the cylinder that might have broken when I pushed the car, if it was in gear. now, I don't know how I could have pushed the car while it was in gear, but I guess that's beside the point.
I have now struggled to get the metal central ignition housing unit out to the point that I'd almost rather just ad a hidden starter switch and give up on the actual ignition cylinder, simply because I'm having so much trouble getting to it. But I'm scared that I broke this mystery pin and that the cylinder isn't even the problem and that adding an extra starter button won't help me start the car.
so I guess my question is whether there is some safety pin thing that could have broken when I pushed the car? or does it have to be the cylinder, in which case, can I just add a button to start the car instead of killing myself trying to get this housing out?
thanks for the help.
