I have a 1993 Classic Convertible with 100,000 miles. I have an issue with jumping out of first gear. I recently replaced a broken RHS hydraulic engine mount and, in case, the front (solid) one too. I thought initially this had cured the first gear issue but it has only reduced it. Changing the RHS side was quite difficult as I had to both jack the side of the engine (as suggested on this website) and use a pry bar to get the room to rotate the mount in.

I have now inspected the gear shift linkage but before pulling anything apart would like advice on what I should consider.

I did not pull the centre console and pin the third gear assuming from an inspection point of view that putting the car in third gear would be sufficient. Nevertheless during inspection in and under the car I saw the following:

a. In third gear, using a 4mm drill bit, the alignment hole in the shifter rod under the car is quite a bit out and does not align with the alignment hole on the back differential plate. Roughly, using a clock face, the shaft hole is at 7 o-clock, and the drill bit at 7.30. On selecting first gear the shaft hole rotates past the drill bit to about 8.30. I’m assuming the direction the alignment is out is adversely affecting first gear selection.

b. I noted there is quite a bit more left to right waggle in the gearstick when in first gear (and second gear)when compared to being in third gear. From underneath, waggling the gearstick right/left in third had no effect on the shift linkage but in first gear some rotational movement of the shifter shaft was apparent and again I think could affect first gear selection. Could I have a problem with the gearstick and wear?

c. The shift coupler (held by a pin and clamp under the car) appears in good order.

d. There is a small oil leak from the shifter shaft seal. Is this difficult to fix as I would have to take the coupler off and get that pin out?

e. Lastly, I note that I can take the ignition key out when in both reverse and neutral. Not a huge hassle but is this normal? If not what should I be looking at.
