You won't find a mag plug under that box. After you take off the diff cover and see the screen, there is a mag post in the corner to attract what isn't screened. It will probably be mostly a dark paste of oil, and steel dust.....
Take off the side cover, swing it up and trap the spring with the ball detent -- in case you decide to shift any gears and spin the workings.
Look at the slider gear and the mating reverse gear to see how many lost teeth it has. Hopefully, both gears are in good shape.
Take off the front cover and see if the chains are broken or if the chains are loose. The front side cover shows the intermediate gears and you can find them in good shape usually. I found a way to break a set :-)
Cmyles can chime in on the layshaft details, but I think you would need to take it all apart to check it as I recall.
