The layshaft in that unit will be the improved version with a bushing between the shaft and needle bearing and they tend to be fairly trouble free. Apart from finding that the cluster exhibits free radial play, which would indicate a real problem, there's no check you can do without a lot of disassembly and anyway the focus should be on the pinion bearings. They are always the first thing to go. Like landjet said, open it up and look for metal chunks or obvious damage and consider the condition of the oil. It would be a smart move to replace all the gaskets and seals before installation. At 91K it either needs some of them or soon will.
