Paul,
What does that sound look like?
In a galaxy far-far away... Well, one day I noticed a sound that made be turned around since I thought there was some Cobra fighter on my six in 200-300 yards above me. As you may guess, there were no Cobra's around and I was lucky to find out that sound was coming from the left front wheel that had its axle nut loose quite a bit. After I had that nut tightened up the noise went away. In my case it sounded like... like rattling sound from old plane engines of '30-50 era. And it wasn't changing whenever I was turning left or right.
I can't imagine any conditions from real world when your differential is fully locked to a single wheel only - unless you're stuck with one side on the road and another - in the mud. So although you tranny looks quite old and - as CMyles have noted - most probably needs some service, I'd guess that it's either wheel bearing or CV joint. It also may be the inner driver bearing (#11 on the diagram below).
You may want to fully jack up the front end and have a friend trying all the gears with the engine running while you check different locations with a stethoscope (be careful when working under the car). I can't think of any better - in terms of time and money - way to find the most probable source for your noise.
Good luck,
Zig
