Back story: '87 900 Turbo 5 Speed. 140k. Red Box (factory redbox, but installed aftermarket), 3bar FPR, Bougicords. Unsure of distributor P/N.
Got the car in base boost...but needle only went to about 1/4 into yellow. Pinched APC hose going to wastegate and the car went like stink...but still only boosted to about 3/4 into yellow. Hm...never to red.
Car developed a slight stumble under (base) boost...but cleaned and re-gapped plugs and that cleared it right up.
Ran the car a few times with APC to WG hose pinched (for testing purposes)...and it got less and less fast each time. Got pressure gauge and verified base boost. Noticed that a vac line was loose on the drivers side...turns out it was the one to the gauge in the dash. Fixed that.
NOW...base boost shows 1/2 way up the gauge in the dash. So i pinched the hose from the APC again...expecting the car to go like stink and at least see that needle hit the red. Well...thats not exactly true. The needles did go VERY close to the red...but...the car didnt go any faster. In fact...it felt slower under full boost than it did at base boost. What?
Now...is it safe to say my distributor and/or timing retard system isnt functioning correctly? I offer that up for suspicion because i can blow through the line going to that diaphragm. BARELY....but i DO feel a bit of air passing...and it sounds like its coming out from near the IC.
My thoughts now: Could be a torn boot. Could be bad timing retard system.
There are three seals in the IM. One if for the hoses that go to PCV...one is for hoses that go to dash gauge...and one is for hoses that go to hooter valve. All of the seal in the IM can be wiggles fairly easily...but dont pop out without effort...could boost be escaping here, too?
Anything else to check would be helpful...im pulling hair out!
