It was along the straight more or less flat part of the fender further back. Therefore they were able to use stock sheet metal for the repair.
When I had it done on the front fender (that did involve rust spreading from the weld where the inner and out fender are joined, I did have the body shop weld a patch that included both halves and the weld that was cut from a good fender I l got from a junkyard. I paid a $100 bucks for the junkyard fender, and another $650 to have that patch welded in, and have all of the usual bodywork/cosmetics finished (whole fender was repainted to match the car).
