Thanks Christopher Myles for the exact details of bearing shields vs seals.

So when Simon S. said the original SKF bearings had metal seals, and replacements have plastic ones, is he a little off base?

I have actually removed the shields from shielded older bearings before, and reinstalled them, as well as the seals from sealed bearings, to get fresh grease and lube into bearings that were functional and not wearing but so old they were dried out.

Some of the shields had spiral spring rings on the outside edge, fitting into a groove in the outer race, that held the shields in.

I'd swear I had seen some bearings with a stainless steel shield that had a neoprene sealing lip on its inner edge, thus a metal seal, as Simon S was describing, and if such an animal exists it wouldn't really be much different from a totally neoprene-jacketed seal.

My refined technique of re-lubing older bearings is to drill a tiny hole in the seal out in its middle, insert a grease needle on a grease gun and inject a little grease, maybe also squirt a little oil in as well, not too much. Then wipe area clean and seal the hole with a drop of silicone.

I had too much trouble from bending seals or shields when I lifted them out of the bearing - - you can slip the end of a sewing needle past the sealing lip and use it to pry the seals out, but it usually bends the sheet metal some and it's almost impossible to flatten it back to proper shape.

How's that Norton you posted a link to photos of coming? Have you finished it and driven it yet, and have you sold it?
