Not familiar with the 360 degree rings, you probably just need to get a pick under it...
By being properly sized, the gap in the piston seal is reduced to zero upon installation, just as with a piston. The spring tension keeps it fixed to the housing, and it ends up being a flange seal (meaning, it seals on the face of the groove, not radially on the shaft), which makes for near zero friction, and adequate oil sealing (as opposed to Perfect oil sealing, which it certainly is not). The oil pressure seen at the exhaust seal is minimal. Remember, the flow is limited by the bearing itself, and is free draining. In addition, it is usually countered by exhaust back-pressure (this is why a failing seal will leak only at idle).
