If you have no spark then you should closely inspect the Hall effect connection at the distributor. The other common cause of the problem you are describing is a bad ignition amplifier. It's on the Driver's side inner fender near the cruise control pump. There is also a resistor inside the ignition rotor which can go open and cause "no spark" and it's an easy check/fix. I'm not aware of any common problems with 1988 ECUs but I am aware that people all too often incorrectly blame their ECU when they have such problems. The ECUs in these cars are generally very reliable.
