I've had issues with my '90 SPG ECU. It's not the same as the 88, but I can describe some typical issues. When I first got the car, it would sometimes start, run, then start to idle funny before going into "limp home mode" - aka it would limp forward just shooting enough gas into the engine to jolt forward at about 2 miles per hour. I switched in a different ECU and it solved it for a while until the idle got real bad again. Eventually found out it was the EGR system that was blocked.

Also seen it just turn over with spark, but get no farther than that. Switched ECU and it worked.

Also been driving and suddenly as if the accelerator was stuck, it revved to like 5000 rpm and wouldn't come down. Swapped ECU and it was fine.

If you have an EGR car and have removed the EGR system and left the EGR (582) ECU in there, it will run fine but always with a check engine light on. Swap in a 585 or 948 and it works (on a 90 or later).

Every time, I have kept the ECU that seemed bad and later found out that it was almost always an unrelated problem. But having a fresh ECU for some reason worked. So I have a stockpile now of spares of different serial numbers to try just in case. Some work in certain situations while others don't.
