The button switch and the relay switch handle two different amp loads. The heating element inside the back glass wants power that equals resistance and require a larger load that the button switch can not handle. Your case is called, "Relay Burn Out." The relay contacts become less conductive in passing the power and cause a load in which becomes heat. Replace the relay and use correct fuse. When ever I'm inside the dash, I uninstall and install each relay or plug. On a 20+ year car, the last time contact was made most likely at the factory. I also do it with the fuses. Might seem like it's more effort but, I know the chances are better for the transfer of electrical current. (More later on VW 6 volt systems.) Anybody remember those VW gremlins?
