I kind of agree, in that a car is more of a liability when at school. I didn't own one until I finished grad school + got a job in industry (and even then, I waited almost a year... I ride bikes a lot...
anyway, if I had a "nearly" rust free c900 (which I do) and there was a good otherwise well maintained but rusting beater available cheaply to keep the rust free one off the road in winter, I would think that would be a good investment (if any car can be called an "investment")... especially if it has a better transmission... and if one can do the swap ones-self... in fact I have a winter beater and it has served us well...
but one should note that there is some increased cost to owning 2 cars even if you only drive 1 car year round: storage, registration, basic repairs (in contrast to 1 car as 100%) won't be 50/50, more like 60/60 in my experience...
imho, it would probably not be unwise to take a look at the car...
