interior lights still dead - ruled out usual suspects

Just going through my new-to-me 86 SPG. Next on my list is addressing the inerior lights, radio and clock which are inop. I have read through a ton of input on int. light issues, most of which address a gunked up switch, bad door switch wiring and the buzzer relay under the rear seat. Those have now all been checked for continuity and ruled out. While I had my multimeter out, I thought I'd check ground continuity at the r/v mirror light and the side dome light. Surprise! There is current, but neither of them had ground. So, where should i start looking to trace that? is there a common ground point that both fixtures use? The car had a cellular phone installed in the 90's, and an aftermarket stereo (which only flickers on and off, won't stay on...) so there has been some fiddling around with the headliner and wiring at some point. I have not yet taken a look under the dash area for bad wiring, but i suspect that is where i need to look for the light ground point(??).
thanks,
scott
