Bob,
my advice is to pick up any head-unit (which stands for what you call radio) of any real brand that gives you the look you prefer. This means:
- Pioneer/Premier, Clarion, JVC, Alpine, Panasonic, Sony, Kenwood - these are... say, these are the brands which are good and approved
- Prology, Pyle and so forth - do not buy them. Even if it has 7" LCD and can read dvd+blueray+SACD+DVD-A, supports SD card, iPod, and USB-sticks and they promise it gives you a b\j - do not buy them. They are not always that bad, but I don't recommend helping those boys. Long story, but trust me.
- if some model is above your price range, try ebay, amazon and craiglist, that's quite ok
- if you find some Pioneer/Premier radio that must look perfect in your dash, but lacks iPod connectivity which you struggle for - pick it up, you can add iPod adapter (among with USB-adapter, bluetooth-adapter, line-in-adapter and on, and on) later. Just ensure that it's got IP-bus (Pioneer bus for connecting all the devices together). Premier brand is US-specific so I don't know much of it, but with Pioneer it's all quite simple: every head-unit that has P right before the digits is enabled for IP-bus connectivity (e.g.: DEH-P80 has got IP-bus, DEH-80 has none)
Below is the shot of Pioneer head-unit (EU model DVH-P580MP, actually; I had to put it into bokeh since the shot wsa primary about the remote control) with steering wheel IR-remote control unit. I've got USB-adapter and still thinking whether to add bluetooth or not. I'm not a big fan - to say the least - of Apple so iPod adapter has never been planned to be added, though it is widely available and doesn't cost you a leg and an arm.
Click the link to see DEH-P77MP, you can also browse that photo-site to see some other shots of different car-audio.
Good luck,
Zig
