i think you have to pull the timing cover. In any case, having a buddy help when lifting and refitting is a minimum for being safe, and a hoist would be awesome. I hate the idea of damaging the gasket, or at the minimum damaging the sealant at the front corner oil passageway. When was the last time the turbo/exhaust setup was removed? Some of those bolts can be a problem. The nice thing about having help/hoist is that you can leave more weight on the head, which means removing less. Keep that in mind when planning the job.
