you would be looking for a break (usually 'worn down' at the point it is exposed to cylinder) in the metal lip that rings the cylinder, and some breakdown in the gasket from there to the nearest water passageway. If you only had oil in the water/water in the oil,then you are only looking for some breakdown between passages. Of course, your old head may also be the culprit... With a 'known good' head, your life is going to be easier! Great that you had the old one.
