I have one of the McCulloch cleaners. I bought it just to see if I could use it for the same things you are mentioning--cheaper than the professional steam generators. It puts out a good amount of steam at a reasonable pressure. It will clean an engine that is not overly greasy. It tends to just turn dark caked on grease to milky caked on grease. I've been spraying my engine projects with a kerosene & concentrated cleaner-degreaser mix in a spray bottle worked with a stiff parts brush and then following up with the steam cleaner. That works well. The steam cleaner works excellent on carpeting and convertible tops though. I got some really rubbed-in dirty spots on both out with little effort. Also good for cleaning just run-of-the-mill dirt (and light grease) out of the engine bay.
