I did 2 clutch slaves yesterday. I just take three of the 12mm bolts that hold the pressure plate to the flywheel, pry the pressure plate out a bit near each alignment pin, and stick three of them in between the pressure plate and flywheel sideways near each pin--basically using the bolt head as a spacer. No problem getting the retainer ring in after that. They usually fall into the bell housing once you get the ring in and you can pick them up once the clutch is out.
The clutch slave line tool you made is a necessity as far as I'm concerned. I have the special SAAB tool #8393571 that is basically the same thing.
I also have a little ratchetting hex tool that makes getting the slave bolts out and in much easier.
