The '89 SPG I got back in August was set up in a most curious manner... it had been maintained by the family's Volvo mechanic and while most things were done properly, the guy clearly did not understand the APC system at all.
The first thing I noticed once I got the car running was a horrible rattling noise... we pinpointed it to the area of the turbocharger. Once I drove the car, the source became more obvious.
The car was dead slow until nearly 4000rpm where a TON of boost would suddenly build and the car would absolutely fly, with the needle going nearly to the end of the red! The car has a 175bhp spec red box but I've never seen anything quite like that.
The rattling was the wastegate! The actuator rod had fused to the arm that attaches to the wastegate itself in a slightly open position. I replaced the rod and wastegate assembly on the turbocharger, and then discovered they had seriously retarded the timing to eliminate knock despite the curious setup.
The car drives great now... but it's an example of how screwed up things can get when someone who doesn't understand the Saab-specific systems buggers around too much...
