Assuming that you still have the tool (ring) installed in the clutch cover and the disc is free to float around then you need to lift the disc slightly, use a big screwdriver, until you have the tip of the shaft aimed right at the bore of the pilot bearing. You have to also get the splines of the upper chainwheel and shaft aligned so that the shaft can slip inward. It can be frustrating, just keep jiggling the disc until the tip of the shaft is in the right place relative to the bearing. If you have already removed the tool then you'll need to step on the pedal and release the disc so that it can be lifted and aligned.
