Is by changing everything over. The angles are all different, and there would be gaps.
There was a chrome grille available for the 84-86 style grille. Popular outside North America on the top of the line models like Convertibles, etc. It was never fitted from the factory on cars for NA.
You can take the grille apart, separating the black part from the grey part, and have that chromed. When you put it back together, it'll look great.
Interestingly, from 1987- the only grille in the US was the chrome grille. But outside NA, there was still a painted grille, and the chrome one was fairly rare! I found a goot 87- chrome grille and sent it to my friend in Sweden for his 900...
The pic below is my long departed 1986 900 turbo with a chrome grille.
