easy to change the fluid. Drain plug is the one with the slot, forward of the oil drain plug. Use only Ford type F + be super clean (I keep a funnel in a zip loc used only for atf). Type F is actually getting a little uncommon to find! I just do a triple drain/refill/drive because it is so easy, but tubocon86 has a good writeup re how to do a complete flush with basic stuff you probably already have around the house. See link + and see the CE webpages for a photo how-to...
there is a filter inside + there is more one can do, but periodic fluid changes should help a lot. I was remiss early on (as were previous owners) + that probably cost me. Probably also didn't help that I'd downshift on the highway to pass faster etc... stuff I don't do with them anymore! It's a good idea to be a little bit gentle. These are not high mileage cars + I would be more happy taking them on long trips if they had sticks, but aside from lacking a 4th gear, I've certainly driven worse automatics in modern cars (Mazda5, Subarus, etc)...
the reverse failure didn't give any warning - just wouldn't go into reverse one morning (after a long fast highway trip). otherwise, I think the common failure mode is relatively progressive (2-3 shift point slips upwards over time until it's gone completely)... can seemingly go years in a sub-par state before complete failure...
