If you just have a small crack starting, you can fill it with SEM #39927 Flexible Weld. It is a 2-part epoxy for repairing car plastic parts. That may stop it, at the very least it will slow it down. I have a small repair that is about 8 years old on one of my dashes and it has not grown.
I use 303 Aerospace Protectant on my dashes. It was made for boat interiors--good stuff.
I'm not a fan of dash covers unless your dash is already cracked. What's the point of having a perfect dash if you are just going to hide it? I do have a set of fold-up windshield shades that I put on if the car is going to be parked in the sun for a long time.
