Look at the diagrams in the Bentley. That'll tell you what changed and when. I seem to recall a connector change, but I may be thinking of a 9000 instead of the 900...
One thing that needs to be addressed in any swap is the speedometer connection. For LH 2.2 cars the speedo connection is ONLY used for the cruise control, but LH 2.4 & 2.4.2 require a speed input from the speedo. Not a problem if you're putting a "2.4" cluster in a "2.2" car, though.
Also, the shift up light (assuming you care...) requires a different polarity for 2.4 cars. In 2.2 cars, shift up is a separate box that sends +12v to the cluster to light the light. 2.4 cars have the shift up built into the LH box, and it grounds the lead from the cluster to light the light. In the crossover years, when Saab sold both 2.2 & 2.4 900s, they used the 2.4 cluster, but there was an electronic "relay" that flipped the voltage for the 2.2 cars.
