Getting the knee bolster out was a bit confusing the first time then became quite easy. The key for me was finding the two bolts on the outside of the firewall. Someone finally suggested that they may be covered in putty. Bingo. They are located behind the back side of the wheel wells...use your flashlight and you will find the putty or the bolts (the putty often falls off). An extension and, I think, 10mm socket to remove them. Of course you need to remove the console to get to the bolt behind the ashtray and to give access for dropping the knee bolster (lower dash pad). You will find a circular rubber piece (unless it fell off) on the knee bolster where the two nuts penetrate. These commonly deform or fall off. Upon reassembly, I bought two properly threaded stainless bolts from the hardware store, two largish washers (IIRC you have to cut a notch out of one washer for it to fit flush due to curvature in the metal surrounding one bolt hole) and then cut a circular piece of bicycle inner tube to fit under each of the washers. This should prevent water from penetrating the bolt holes. And put a loop of duct tape (sticky side out) in your socket so the bolt doesn't drop out when you set it in the hole.
