Typical primers are not intended to be exposed for any real length of time and exposure implies the potential for contact with, and absorption of, substances that might adversely affect the topcoat as well as the primer itself. The list of crappy primers available for auto body is much longer than the list of high quality ones and a paint-job can be ruined by substandard primer. Personally, I would refuse to spray a topcoat on a panel that was brought to me in primer other than factory applied primer and maybe not even then depending on it's condition and appearance. There's no magic product that will compensate for a low quality primer except paint stripper and the entire paint job relies on a good, properly applied primer. Adhesion is the first concern, both to the metal or underlying finish, and secondly to the topcoat. Adverse reactions of the topcoat are another major concern and knowing that your products are good quality and fully compatible is the key to avoiding those issues. Having one failed paint job can put a painter "in the hole" for the next three or four so there's no room for experimenting.
