Did you make sure you have the thermostat that has the relief hole in the base, and is it pointing upward towards the bleed screw. Also, did you bleed the air out of the system when you changed the thermostat.
Make sure the small return line from the radiator to the expansion tank isn't blocked, and the coolant is flowing from the rad to the tank.
I had to drive through the desert with the heater on, only to find out that the previous owner/mechanic had blocked off the small return line to the expansion tank.....the only way to keep it cooler was to run the heater.
