Eh. I guess it's possible. I dunno about probable. I suppose crap in any seal, be it the slave o-rings or the master's would be able to cause a temporary leak. I doubt if twisting the seal up inside the slave could cause it to leak, the rubber of the seal is too soft. Rebuilt slaves tend to have a very short half-life, so I wouldn't divert my suspicion too far. I take it from your description that the fluid loss was at the slave?
Basically, as the others have mentioned, there's only so many options...
