Compression fittings use a little ferrule of copper, tapered in both directions, that slides over the outside of the tube. First you slide on a nut that's specially made and has a corresponding taper inside it, then the ferrule, then a fitting after the ferrule, also with a corresponding taper inside it. Then when you tighten down the nut you squeeze the ferrule up against both tapers and it gets compressed down onto the outside of the tube.
Easy, but as C Myles says NOT TO BE USED for brake lines; the line can slide right out of the ferrule no matter how tight you compress it. THey need a flare fitting, and a double flare fitting at that, not a common single-flare as used in some plumbing and low-pressure line applications. Double flaring uses a separate "button" to turn the end of the tube back on itself, making it double thick, then a standard flaring tool bevel tip to create the flare. Kind of a guarantee against the flare cracking.
