This is a picture of some scrap plumbing fittings of course. They were more readily accesible than my actual brake line fittings and because they are much bigger I thought they would be better to illustrate the basic design of each type. At the top is a flare fitting assembly; tubing, flare nut and fitting. At the bottom is a compression fitting; tubing, compression nut, compression ring and fitting. Compression fittings aren't used much in the automotive world, sometimes on fuel lines in carburetted cars because those fuel lines aren't pressurized like fuel injected systems. In household plumbing we use a simple "single flre" as seen in the photo but for brake lines a "double flair" or "bubble flare" is used because it's stronger and less prone to failure but it's still a flare with the same basic principle as the one in the photo. Single flares are easily formed on the tubing with a simple cheap flaring tool. Double and bubble flares are made with a more elaborate and expensive flaring tool. Some parts stores or hydraulic hose shops can do a double flare on your tubing for a small charge. Don't forget to slide on the flare nut before making the flare or you'll have to cut off the tubing and do it again (a very common brain fart). Hope this helps.
