Bad idea I think Posted by Cmyles [Email] (#1126) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Cmyles) on Tue, 18 Dec 2012 14:13:53 In Reply to: Shifter coupler that works...., Jon [Profile/Gallery] , Mon, 17 Dec 2012 17:15:00 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
When it comes to engineering I'm not in Jorgen Eriksson's league but the geometry of the shift control rods in our C900s does not allow for or require a cardan joint in place of the rubberized coupling unless the shift control box is then rubber mounted. The power-plant is rubber mounted to the chassis while the shift control box is solidly mounted. The rubberized coupling allows some tiny angular articulation, stretching and compression and vibration dampening (like a motor mount does). The cardan joint ONLY allows for angular articulation and the level of that required here is very small (or our rubberized couplings would all have split apart leaving the dealer's lot back in 1979 - 1994. These rubberized couplings usually last many years and are then replaced with a new one that will last just as long so I consider them to represent quality, thoughtful engineering typical of Saab.
