OldSaab - What you'd technically need would probably be limited to the plastic "bucket." It may turn out you need the clips that hold the glass to the bucket and seal as well. I'm sure the seal could be replicated. You would probably *want* the inner reflector as well, but it wouldn't be explicitly necessary. The old reflector and glass lens would be replaced.
Cark: I am a little worried about the look as well, but like you said, you probably don't want to sacrifice safety for appearance. I also have dealt with wrecked reflectors, and I have yet to find a *real* solution. Various platings make it look nice again, but none of them truly reproduce the reflectivity of the stock treatment.
That said, the piece that I was missing was a way to mimic the glass lens, and that's the piece I believe I've found. The *profile* of the lights would be unchanged. It would be the inner light element(s) that would be different. Look at any modern car and observe the projector lights tucked behind a plastic "aero cover"... that's what I'm talking about, except the "aero cover" would be decidedly non-aerodynamic - just as it is stock. ;) You could very readily polish/chrome/whatever the "guts" of the solution to make it look very, very similar to stock.
My goal in this would be change as little as possible, to preserve the look of the car. Hence using the factory plastic buckets, and mimicking the factory glass lense. I don't want to lose the look either! But I also want to be able to see at night. ;)
