The copper braid (shielding) around the signal wires are there to prevent the signal wires from the distributor to the ignition amp from picking up induced current from other miscellaneous electric/magnetic fields. The signal from the distributor pickup is very weak, like millivolts or even microvolts, and induced noise on those wires could interfere with the signal to the ignition amp. When I spliced that wire on my car I laid the braids as close as I could to each other, soldered in a jumper from one to the other, then wrapped the splice area with conductive copper foil tape.
Having said all that, I don't really know how sensitive that wiring is in practice, or if a break in the shielding is that big of a deal. As I recall, the shield is terminated at the ignition amp (only), and if that's the case any shielding on the distributor side of a discontinuity would be isolated (not connected to anything).
My guess is that if you have a good spark the shielding probably isn't your problem, but that's just a guess. My suspicion is that a problem due to the shielding (if you had one) would be a misfire under certain conditions (such as engine speed).
