The oil pump blueprinting is done....and Posted by DET17 [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: Re: Oil pump clearances?, DET17 ![]() |
I was able to get a feeler gauged clearance of .001"~.002" when checking both gears against the pump housing casting. My Bentley manual says the desired tolz. is .001"~.003", so I'm calling it a success.
Surface plate used - synthetic marble tiles, ripped out of my living room floor. These appear to be ground flat. I can't measure HOW flat, but the results (using 220 wetNdry paper) on top:
Outer gear thickness was 0.428" with variation of 0.0005" max.
Inner crank gear thickness was 0.428 with variation of 0.001" max (one spot)
It was slow going, but new sheets of 220 W-n-D paper help immensely. As soon as you feel the "friction reduction" across the whole face of the paper, then slap a new sheet on the tile/glass and continue. The oil pump housing wet sands flat faster as it is aluminum. You can bear down on the gears and it takes a WHILE to reduce thickness. I should have measured mine before/after for SAAB posterity, but didn't.
