I recently did my oil pump o-ring and read the part about sanding down the housing on a flat surface to make sure it was flat. I completely opted out of that step. I figured that it was good when it was put together, and that I was simply replacing an o-ring. I put a little motor oil on the rubbing surafces of the gears and housing, and crammed it back together. Honestly, if you sanded down the housing a thousandth or two and the oil pump gears may be tighter than original, they'll quickly wear the inner surface of the housing back down to whatever tightness they want to normally run at. The weak link is going to be the aluminum housing. I wouldn't worry about it, and its not surprising you can't sand down those gears. At my work we have adhesive sandpaper and a huge marble block that's guaranteed flat to +/- 1 metric knats a$$ give or take an angstrom. THAT's what you need to remove material from the gears, where you can really bear down on a perfectly flat hard surfacea and lap the object evenly...........wait that sounded weird. You know what I mean though.
